“In a perfect world we’d all sing in tune, but this is reality so give me some room!”

-Billy Bragg

Waiting

One thing that can be hard is all the waiting.

The every day waiting: Waiting in traffic. Waiting at the doctor’s office. Waiting for a table at a restaurant. The mom-type waiting: Waiting while they play on the playground. Waiting to see if anybody needs me. Waiting for everyone to get ready for bed so I can finally go to bed myself.

Then there’s the existential waiting. Waiting while I figure out what I’m doing with my life and where I’m headed. Waiting to see how my children turn out. Waiting for our polarized nation to find some common ground.

About that. I find the polarization so disheartening, to the point that it’s getting in the way of my own personal progress as much as it’s hurting our communities and our country. More on all of this to come, but let’s just say that I’m waiting for a time that feels more reasonable, more respectful, more focused on the collective greater good. A time when I will feel more free to add my voice to the conversation.

In the words of the great Billy Bragg, I am waiting for the great leap forwards, for myself but also for all of us. So thanks for keeping me company – together we might just see this through.
